Meeting the Needs of Kids in Therapy

Therapy sessions are structured yet flexible, allowing space for connection, curiosity, and growth. While play is often central, it is always purposeful. Through these interactions, children can learn how to:

  • Identify and name their emotions

  • Express feelings in safe and appropriate ways

  • Develop coping skills for big emotions

  • Improve emotional regulation and impulse control

  • Build confidence and self-esteem

I listen closely to my clients—no matter their age—to understand their needs, strengths, and challenges. Children are always met with warmth, respect, and care.

Hyperactivity & ADHD

Children with hyperactivity or ADHD often struggle with impulse control, emotional regulation, focus, and frustration tolerance. Therapy can help children better understand their bodies and emotions, develop strategies to manage big energy and strong feelings, and build skills that support success at home and school. I also work collaboratively with caregivers to provide guidance and consistency outside of sessions.

Childhood Anxiety

Anxiety in children may show up as excessive worry, avoidance, school refusal, physical complaints, or difficulty separating from caregivers. Therapy provides a safe space for children to explore their fears, learn calming strategies, and build a sense of security and confidence. The goal is not to eliminate anxiety, but to help children feel more capable and supported in managing it.

Emotional Regulation

Many children experience big emotions they don’t yet know how to handle. This can lead to meltdowns, outbursts, withdrawal, or difficulty transitioning. Therapy helps children recognize emotional cues, understand what their feelings are communicating, and practice healthier ways to cope and communicate.

How can parents help their children while in therapy?

Caregivers play an essential role in a child’s therapeutic process. Depending on your child’s needs, therapy may include regular parent check-ins, guidance, and support. My goal is to help you better understand your child’s emotional world and to offer tools that can be used at home to reinforce progress made in sessions.
